22 Apr Driving Communication & Precision at Every Level: STATSports x Standard de Liège
With 10 league titles and 8 Belgian Cups, Standard de Liège stands as one of the most successful clubs in Belgian football history. Currently pushing for a European playoff spot, the club is placing increased emphasis on performance data—using STATSports across every level, from academy to first team.
By integrating GPS technology into daily operations, Standard de Liège has enhanced their ability to monitor player load, tailor training, and support long-term development—all while improving communication between coaching staff and performance teams.
From Planning to Performance: Using Data to Shape the Week
Every player at Standard de Liège wears an APEX device during training and matches. Post-session, specifically, coaches at the club keep an eye on high intensity markers such as; sprint distance, accelerations, and decelerations, which are available in more detail post-session in a matter of minutes on Sonra.
“We use this data to plan the week” explains First Team Physical Trainer Yves Depluvrez.
“We check if we’re on track with what was planned, and we can redirect training based on what we see.”
By comparing planned versus actual output, the performance team delivers immediate feedback to coaches, allowing for real-time adjustments to upcoming sessions—ensuring training loads are aligned with match demands.
Live Data, Real-Time Decisions
This season, Liège introduced live GPS monitoring to further elevate on-pitch decision-making. With real-time data available via tablet and Watch, the coaching team can make immediate calls on session intensity, substitution timing, or additional conditioning.
“This allows me to manage live with the coach, I can say: ‘Watch out, we’re hitting our upper limits—let’s be careful.’”
Live visibility has added a new layer of precision, helping avoid underloading or accidental overloads while keeping players at the right intensity throughout the session.
Structured Return to Play with Live Monitoring
STATSports technology also plays a central role in return-to-play protocols. For players coming back from injury, live data allows the medical and performance staff to closely track key markers and ensure athletes hit their targets—without exceeding safe thresholds.
“It’s also useful for players returning from injury,” Depluvrez adds. “We plan their reintroduction to training, and we know exactly what parameters we want to achieve on each day.”
This approach not only reduces re-injury risk, but provides a transparent, progressive framework for reintegration.
Full-Club Integration, From Academy to First Team
With STATSports implemented club-wide, Standard de Liège has established a consistent, data-informed performance model—one that supports player development at every level.
From rehab to peak performance, the club is building a connected system grounded in communication and precision—empowering coaches to make smarter decisions and helping players perform at their best, every day.
